Architecture site analysis is the process of researching and analysing the social, historical, climatic, geographical, legal, and infrastructural characteristics of a given site, and synthesizing these analyses into visual information — usually in the form of site analysis diagrams. Site analysis is a predesign research activity which focuses on existing and potential conditions on and around the building site. It is an inventory of the site factors and forces, and how they coexist and interact. With regards to this, Sem 2 students were introduced to the Site Analysis subject wherein they were explained various factors to be considered when we go for a Site Visit, its importance and relevance in Architecture.

Faculties gave a lecture on considering factors such as site location, topography, zoning regulations, traffic conditions, and climate which allows a designer to maximize its inherent opportunities and anticipate any potential issues which may cause problems to the project. Also, students were briefed about the presentation of site analysis which should include visual representation of the site in the form of annotated photographs, initial sketches of the site, site mapping and site analysis diagrams. Further students were taken to the site which is chosen for Sem II Design Brief. The site chosen is located behind Pillai Campus, New Panvel.

Activities Undertaken:

  • The Architectural Design Brief was introduced.
  • An Introductory session was undertaken on conducting a site analysis
  • The site plan with dimensions of the the extents was given to the students
  • On-site, the students cross-checked the dimensions.
  • Topographical and climatic conditions on site were evaluated and discussed.
  • The students cross-checked the north location using the mobile app compass.
  • The students made site plans and sections and sketches of views from various locations.

Students studied and observed general data which includes the geographic location of the site, its boundaries and entrance locations and types. They also noted the site security, if any, and if there are any existing buildings on the site.

They also studied the most important factor that is the Natural features present on the site. These are the physical features of the site. For example, are there trees or other vegetation or rocks. If there’s a river, pond or other body of water, that must be identified as well as the drainage patterns.
