Anubhuti, the social service wing of Pillai College of Architecture, New Panvel, hosted a heartwarming Community Service Day to bring joy and learning to children from the NGO “Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram, Chinchavli”. Held on our college premises, the event showcased our commitment to giving back to the community and forming meaningful bonds with those in need.

The event began with a warm welcome for 29 guests, who were given badges before enjoying a delicious lunch. Afterward, a variety of fun activities filled the agenda. A standout was the clay workshop led by Prof. Jayesh Patil, where kids were encouraged to get creative and express themselves through art. Guided by Prof. Patil, the children molded clay into different shapes, using it as a way to express their feelings.

Following the clay workshop, a range of games and activities were organized to keep the children entertained. The classic game of musical chairs brought smiles and excitement as participants competed for seats. These activities not only brought joy but also helped develop social skills and teamwork among the children.

To wrap up the day, students from “Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram, Chinchavli” performed a dance to express their gratitude to PiCA. The event concluded with the distribution of participation certificates for the clay workshop and small gifts as tokens of love.

Anubhuti, the social service wing of PiCA had organized a workshop for children from underprivileged sections of society and orphanages as part of the Community Service Day celebrations done every year in Pillai College. Around 22 students accompanied by a volunteer from Bhairavdev Vidyalaya near Panvel came to the college for this purpose. A total of 10 student volunteers from the 1st and 2nd-year batches of architecture signed up for this cause and helped carry out the activities smoothly.

Two student volunteers accompanied the bus that brought the children from the school to our college. As soon as they were brought to the college, they were provided with lunch at 12:30 p.m. and then with the badges. The workshop was carried out in the 3rd-floor architecture studio and it began at around 1 p.m. The children participated actively in the craft and origami workshops, followed by a small dance workshop to conclude the session. Before leaving, the children were also provided with small snack boxes and gifts from the college. The event finally ended successfully at 4 p.m. and the children were accompanied back to their school by two of our student volunteers from the college.

Inclusive Social Awareness:
Many institutions work towards improvement of the relatively unpriviledged sections of the society. However, there is always a subtle line of separation between “them” and “us”. Community service day aims at bridging this gap by inviting the students into our daily lifes for a day and having fun with them, eating with them, playing with them.

How is the day celebrated?
The day starts with the bus going to the Adivasi school and bringing the kids to PiCA in a college bus. The kids introduce themselves and head for lunch. The lunch is followed by different activities which the kids enjoy.

Highlights:
Activities conducted this year were both for fun as well as entertainment and skill building.

  1. Ganesha Idol from clay
  2. Photo frames from scap plastic spoons and Tinted sheet
  3. Short film screening

Sharing and caring:
The idea of getting together and having fun is most important here.

In the words of the Shri. Sunil Shinde, the teacher and care taker of the students; this is the day the kids look forward for the entire year.

The kids enjoy the day most, as they see the world outside very rarely and that’s the reason they enjoy it the most.

  1. Their aspirations and interests are shaped in such sessions.
  2. The success of the day lies in the idea that the kids forget their day to day battles and enjoy the camaraderie with the architecture students.

Attendance:
The event was attended by 10 students of first and third year Architecture.

It was well received by the kids from Ashram.

Take Aways:

  1. Sharing our abundance gives immense joy.
  2. A small change ie days joy makes a large difference to these kids.
