Site Visit to Guruashish Redevelopment Projects, Opposite to Old Post Office, Old Panvel

SubjectArchitectural Building Construction and Materials
Session 2022 - 23
Year2nd (Semester -03)
Date 28th July, 2022
Semester 03
Faculty Subject Coordinator: Prof. Sasmit Acharekar & Sumitra Kadam

Aim:
The site visits are conducted to have a practical and hands on experience of building construction methods and understanding of site dynamics.

Objectives:

  1. Understanding of construction site in terms of Architects responsibility, approach to site works, security and material management.
  2. Understanding of the sequence of centre line layouts and column positioning on site.
  3. Physical understanding of materials- reinforcement, concert types (P.C.C., R.C.C. and shuttering)
  4. Understanding assembly of steel cage for column construction
  5. Understanding assembly for steel jail for footing reinforcement.
  6. Methods and technique for tying steel
  7. Methods and technique for installation of Shuttering.
  8. Understanding of drawing form respective consultants. Checking of site work with reference to the architectural and structural drawings.

Proceedings:
The architectural building construction and material lectures and studio started with introducing fundamentals of reinforcement cement concrete structures, Material Syntax and general overview of the frame structures. The studio includes drafting of structural drawing for a simple framed structure. Students designed an open office plan within a regular grid, providing for and entrance canopy, staircase and a toilet block. Each student have liberty to design these basic functional components as per their understanding.

The present stage of theory and studio is to understand concrete and steel as a building material. Understanding foundation systems and its dynamics. Student are studying the factors which decide the typology of foundation, reinforcement details for isolated pad foundation, method of aligning columns on site (center line reference) and preparing drawing from structural perspective. The site visit precedes theory on foundation details and stages of construction. This helps the student to understand the theory and drawing in studio.

During site visit, student were made to take physical measurement of the footing, reinforcement cage and shuttering. Student interacted with professional like the site supervisor, contractor and masons to have more clear and practical understanding of the subject. Student also observed various process of tying of column reinforcement cage, installation and removal of shuttering and various machinery on the site.

Such visit will be future conducted as the construction on the site progresses, so as to make students understand the entire process of construction and they can easily relate the same to their theory and studio submissions.
