National Service Scheme (NSS) of Architecture Department

As part of the ongoing Swachhta Campaign and in alignment with the principles of sustainability and creative reuse, the NSS unit of Pillai’s College of Architecture organized a unique and engaging event titled “Waste to Art.” The initiative invited first-year students to collect e-waste from their homes or surroundings and transform it into meaningful art or functional objects.

The Activity

Students brought in discarded electronic items such as old keyboards, wires, CDs, chargers, and circuit boards. Over the course of the session, these materials were creatively repurposed into sculpture. The event encouraged students to explore the aesthetic and functional potential of waste, while reflecting on the environmental impact of consumer electronics.

Sustainability Focus

The activity served as a hands-on lesson in upcycling, promoting the idea that waste can be a resource when approached with creativity and responsibility. It also highlighted the growing concern around e-waste pollution and the importance of individual action in reducing landfill burden.

Impact

The enthusiasm and innovation displayed by the students were commendable. Faculty members and NSS coordinators praised the initiative for blending design thinking with environmental awareness. The final creations were displayed on campus, sparking conversations around sustainability and responsible design.

The Waste to Art event was a celebration of creativity, sustainability, and civic consciousness. It empowered students to rethink waste and embrace their role as future designers committed to building a cleaner, more thoughtful world.
