The site visit for the students of Allied design were taken to Aviation Department of Pillai College was conducted during the ongoing construction of the airplane-shaped classroom on the campus on the 12th June 2025. The event was organized as a guided educational visit, where students were taken to the site under the supervision of faculty members.
At the site, students observed:
- The materials being used in construction.
- The 1:1 scale markings laid out before execution.
- The sections and structural divisions.
- The ongoing false ceiling execution and other detailing works.
This hands-on exposure allowed students to experience the translation of design into reality, understand construction processes, and appreciate the technical aspects of execution
Significance of the event
The site visit was significant as it provided students with a practical understanding of the construction process of an innovative, airplane-shaped classroom. Unlike conventional case studies, this live execution site allowed students to witness the project at various stages of development. The visit helped them:
- Understand how 1:1 scale markings guide accurate on-site execution.
- Observe the selection and application of materials in real-time.
- Learn how sections and design drawings are translated into physical form.
- Gain exposure to false ceiling execution and detailing techniques.
- Appreciate the challenges and precision required in executing a thematic design concept.
- Overall, the visit was significant as it bridged the gap between design intent and construction reality, enabling students to relate their academic learning to professional practice.
The visit helped students to:
- Application of Construction Knowledge – Students were able to connect classroom learning about building materials and construction techniques with on-site execution.
- Understanding of Scale and Proportion – By observing 1:1 scale markings before execution, students grasped how design drawings translate into real dimensions on-site.
- Exposure to Building Services and Detailing – The ongoing execution of elements such as sections and false ceiling works provided insights into technical detailing.
- Bridging Theory and Practice – The visit enabled students to witness how design concepts are implemented practically, reinforcing theoretical understanding.
- Observation of Innovative Design Forms – The airplane-shaped classroom allowed students to study creative architectural expression and its structural/material implications.
