Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum has survived almost exactly as it was when first established in the middle of the 19th century as the Victoria and Albert Museum. Besides its spectacular beauty and unique architecture, the collection is a microcosm of the extraordinary talents of Indian master craftsmen and Early Modern artists. The section on Mumbai is particularly interesting, giving visitors a peek into an almost real life account of the 19th century through dioramas and models, which are unique to the Museum.
Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum’s exhibition Limits of the Town, a solo show by Sameer Kulavoor curated by Tasneem Zakaria Mehta, explores Mumbai’s evolving urban landscape. Using the history of the demolished Bombay Fort as a point of departure, the exhibition reflects on shifting boundaries shaped by migration, land reclamation, and expanding infrastructure. Invited to engage with the museum’s urban archives, Kulavoor examines how time, culture, politics, and economics transform visible and invisible cityscapes. His works elevate everyday architectural elements into poetic symbols, seeking the “soul” of a chaotic, hybrid metropolis by reinterpreting ordinary structures as markers of resilience and connection.
There was another exhibition in the Museum which was on 100 years of ART DECO in Mumbai, which showcased very elegant features of Art deco style of Architecture.
The Unique architecture of the Building of the museum was a good case study.
The exhibits of Museums help students to understand the history, through various old maps.
Students were able to understand the history, architectural evolution and urbanization of Mumbai through exhibits.
There was horizontal integration achieved through this site visit where Topic of urbanization of Mumbai was covered as well as case study for architectural design subject was done by the students.
