Architectural Odyssey
The Pillai College of Architecture (PiCA) held its much-anticipated Induction Day on 30th September 2024, welcoming the new batch of architecture students with the event titled “Architectural Odyssey”. The induction took place at the 7th-floor auditorium from 11:00 AM onwards, organized by the PiCA Student Council Senate and supported by faculty and student-led bodies.

The highlight of the day was the Principal’s Address, focusing on the academic framework, institutional rules, and the benefits students would gain throughout their time at PiCA.

During the Induction Day 2024, students were introduced to various student-led initiatives and activities that would shape their journey at PiCA. The Student Council was presented as a vital body that represents student interests, organizing key events and fostering communication between students and faculty. Opportunities to engage in sports activities were highlighted, promoting physical well-being and teamwork. The Anubhuti committee was introduced as the cultural arm of the institution, responsible for organizing events that celebrate creativity and diversity. The role of the social media and graphics team was emphasized in enhancing the college’s digital presence, showcasing student work, and promoting upcoming events. Students were encouraged to actively participate in college-wide events, competitions, and team activities, allowing them to not only grow academically but also build lasting relationships and develop leadership skills. Through these various platforms, students will find ample opportunities to express themselves, network, and contribute to the vibrant campus culture.

Aim of the Induction Day:
The primary aim of “Architectural Odyssey” was to introduce the newly admitted students to the world of architecture, instilling in them a sense of excitement, curiosity, and commitment to the architectural profession. This event was designed to integrate students into the academic and creative culture of PiCA, helping them transition smoothly into their new roles as architecture students. The aim was to introduce the first-year students to the academic structure, rules, and values of PiCA while emphasizing the importance of discipline and the opportunities they will have to grow both academically and professionally.

Objectives of the Induction Day:

  1. Introduction to College Life: To familiarize students with the college environment, academic framework, and key resources available to them, ensuring a smooth transition into the architecture program.
  2. Principal’s Talk on Academic Work: To provide clarity on the academic expectations, key subjects, project-based learning, and the importance of maintaining a high standard of work throughout their studies.
  3. Guidelines on Institutional Rules: To brief students on the institutional rules and regulations, including attendance requirements, submission deadlines, and campus behavior, ensuring they understand the structure within which they will operate.
  4. Highlighting the Benefits of PiCA’s Program: The event aimed to showcase the benefits of being a student at PiCA, such as access to cutting-edge facilities, exposure to industry professionals, workshops, and internship opportunities.

Principal’s Address:

  1. Academic Work:
    The Principal highlighted the importance of a rigorous academic schedule and the role of project-based learning in architecture education. Students were encouraged to think creatively and critically when approaching their assignments. Key subjects, practical studio work, and design projects were outlined as essential components of their learning. The Principal also stressed the importance of time management, collaboration, and consistent effort in successfully completing their coursework.

  2. Institutional Rules:
    The Principal emphasized the importance of adhering to the college’s rules and regulations. Key points included:

    Attendance:
    A minimum attendance requirement of 75% was mandated to ensure consistent participation in lectures and studio work.

    Deadlines:
    Strict deadlines for submission of projects and assignments were laid out, with penalties for late submissions.

    Professional Conduct:
    Students were expected to maintain a high level of discipline, respecting the campus environment and upholding the values of professionalism.

  3. Benefits of the Program:
    The Principal also highlighted the various benefits of PiCA’s architecture program:

Objectives of The Event:

Welcome and Orientation: To formally welcome the first-year students and provide an overview of the architecture program, the curriculum structure, and the academic calendar.

Introduction to the Faculty: To offer students an opportunity to meet their professors, mentors, and the administrative staff who will guide them through their academic journey.

Student Council and Club Introduction: To familiarize students with the various student-led bodies, including the PiCA Student Council Senate and extracurricular clubs, encouraging them to actively participate in campus life.

Creative Inspiration: The event aimed to inspire students through presentations and activities that explore the innovative and artistic aspects of architecture, as symbolized by the abstract, modern design featured in the event’s poster.

Networking and Team Building: The induction day served as a platform for new students to meet their peers and begin building the professional and personal networks that are essential to success in architecture.

Campus Familiarization: To help students get acquainted with the college’s physical environment, including classrooms, design studios, workshops, and other key facilities critical to their education.
