Aim

To understand the functioning and logistics of incubation and innovation center and able to create an environment for the same in their architecture design project.

Objectives

  1. Observing the functioning of incubation and innovative center
  2. To understand the services involved.

The students of semester V visited an incubation and innovation center where they practically understood the different aspects as to how the spaces work in an innovation center.

This will help them to apply the same in their respective architectural design projects.

The case study visit of CIBA happened on Saturday, 2nd of July, 2022 at 11:00 am. The intent of the lecture was to help the students understand the functioning of the incubation and innovation centers. Ar. Jinu Kurien, the architect of CIBA was also present at the time of the visit. He briefly introduced the major thought on understanding an incubation center, the process, the selection criteria, the mentors’ involvement, the functioning, funding, and growth acceleration, its diversification from co-working spaces, and its relative effects on the people working here.

Centre for incubation and business acceleration also known as ‘CIBA’ is a Technology Business Incubator catalyzed and supported by the Department of Science & Technology under the Startup India Action Plan. CIBA is committed to growing a collaborative entrepreneurial network by providing a one-stop support system for start-ups and transforming Mumbai as a hub for innovation. The main ideology behind the incubation center is to nurture the startups and provide them with amenities, networking opportunities, funding, growth acceleration, and prototyping.

The interactive session among Ar. Jinu Kurien and students were further followed by giving them a tour around CIBA and explaining the importance and ideation that came into designing CIBA

The spaces in CIBA are alienated into three distinct sectors for encouraging collaborative modes of working; individual, group, and communal activities. Private offices and hot-desking systems (assigned or unassigned).

The work environment was not just confined to formal spaces but also allowed the freedom of working in an informal space majorly catering to the thought process of youth not confining itself to a box.

The freedom of work was also reflected in their social and communal spaces some of which are cafés, communal tables, and stepped seating summed up to be known as ‘cafetorium’ that acts as a transformational space for hosting meetings to parties.

No rigid walls except the service cores divided the space, thus not creating barriers among spaces and blocking the light entering into space and metaphorically also considering the mindset of the people to have thoughts out of the box.

Diversified notions of spaces have been expressed through the idea of palettes rich in form, material and assemblies, furniture, fixtures, colors, and visual design elements.

Every space has a distinctive personality, wood and metal mix, raw concrete flooring metaphorically highlighting the minds of the youth entering CIBA, epoxy flooring, and color blocking on walls.

After going through the entire walkthrough, the students gathered up for a quick questionnaire session with Ar. Jinu sir on clearing doubts on materials and functionality of the spaces. Overall, the case study visit was helpful for them to identify, and analyze the parameters as well as brought clarity as to thought that needs to be put in terms of designing an incubation center.
