IQAC and the academic monitoring committee of PiCA together organised a faculty training workshop for guiding design dissertation students, on 1st July, 2022.

Aim of the workshop was to orient all the new faculty towards the overall working of design dissertation subject at PiCA, and also to discuss the common challenges faced by the faculty while guiding the students and various approaches that could be adopted by faculty to overcome these challenges.

Prof. Ajita Deodhar welcomed everyone and introduced the subject outline as given in the University syllabus. She also explained why the subject is introduced to students in Sem 7 under College Project and procedure followed to finalize the topic and allotment of guides.

Prof. Smita Dalvi then continued the same thread and explained how important the subject is by explaining how many credits are associated with their thesis topic as other subjects like ARD, Elective, B.Tech, EVS are also designed to complement DD. She then talked about Considerations for “Preparing a Project Proposal” in detail. She explained how objectives of research to be formed by method of enquiry and how the students can find the niche research area while arriving at their research project and take it ahead for micro research and to be submitted as a report under the DD allied elective. Which can then be used in the thesis may be in part or as a whole. She further talked about various research tools students can consider to carry out their research and how they can describe their design project by application of research.

Prof. Jinu Kurien spoke about observations and filters. He covered 10 pointers which included various observations made by him and how can it be better with the use of appropriate filters, for eg. in research proposal vs project proposal, instead of emphasising on one of them, faculty can guide them to investigate and conclude in earlier and be conclusive in the later. He said ideal approach should be defining a research subject and then letting the research define the architectural project.

He further discussed the dissertation types with examples and a few repetitive concerns like scale or unreal topics and how can we deal with them.

The session was summarised by Dr. Sudnya Mahimkar by explaining the outline, where she mentioned faculty should encourage students to start their internship early so that they get a month’s time before the Sem 9 commences, so that they get enough time for live visits and research during the vacation itself. Guides should be touch with them during their internship period. She further talked about various activities which are conducted for DD like guest lectures, workshops or thesis forum etc. She also informed all the faculty and the coordinator to maintain all the progressive records and documentation throughout. It was finalised that guide allotment (Sem 7 DD) would be based on students preferences and their CGPA together.

The workshop was concluded by Dr. Sudnya Mahimkar by thanking everyone. The workshop was an interactive workshop where faculty asked their doubts and also shared their thoughts. It turned out to be a very informative, engaging and a successful workshop.
