Mahatma Education Society’s Pillai’s College of Architecture, New Panvel, Every year PiCA celebrates World Toilet day organizing Nirmal design competition, on successful completion of the Nirmal design competition, We Senate student council in collaboration with Soroptimist Welfare Association (SIBC) organized Prize distribution ceremony on 7th January, 2023, 10:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m. for announcing final results of Nirmal design competition. The ceremony has hosted by Assi.Prof. Aditya Gujarkar with welcoming chief guest Miss. Namrata Saxena President of SIBC, Jurors, Faculty and students from colleges from new Mumbai. Ceremony began with a brief introduction about competition an inter college architectural design competition help on account of world toilet day. An official united nation international observance day which is celebrated on 19th November, 2023. Action taken to tackle global sanitation crisis. The action leads to united nation sustainable development goals of water and sanitation for all by 2030. Brief of the competition focused on roadside toilet facilities therefore participant’s were instructed to select site Context of Navi Mumbai region. Explore architecture of roadside toilet faculties with fresh approach.

After brief introduction about competition brief Introduction about guest lecture on account of world toilet day by Ar. Kalpit Ashar and Ar. Mayuri Sisodiya. Founder of MAD(E)in Mumbai, the mission of their studio lies in transforming everyday of our cites into holistic and fulfilling experience through medium of design, their project dream about future of public sanitation infrastructure in our cities and villages.

This year competition was floated for all architecture colleges in Navi Mumbai region. 9 architecture colleges of Navi Mumbai were participated, we received 48 registrations and 22 proposals were submitted towards an end.

Then explained the process of conducting the Design competition like the coordinator and organizer of competition there were in two teams, Team 1 was student council who took care of registration and allotting the team numbers to the teams. Team 2 was Assi.Prof Aditya Gujarkar and Prof. Ashwini bhosle who looked at managing the submission and Prof. Smita Dalvi was coordinator between us and the jurors.

After explaining Assi.Prof Aditya Gujarkar handed the event over to Prof. Smita dalvi to give brief introduction about jurors and Chief Guest to share their experience about the entries and short introduction about them The jurors were Ar. Parul Kumtha, Architect and Prof. Mustansir Dalvi PhD, Professor of Architecture.

Without further delay, the winners of Nirmal 2022 were announced. The prize winners of NIRMAL Design Competition 2022 were as follows:

  • Popular Choice Award: NDC 2114: Vinay Rathi, Sakshi Pathak, Nilesh Shinde. (PiCA)
  • Joint 3rd Prize 1: NDC 2108: Kshitija Lingam, AnujaKanase, Achintya H.(PiCA)
  • Joint 3rd Prize 2: NDC2112: Mrudula Jadhav. (PiCA)
  • 2nd Prize: NDC2119: Darsheet Vora, Aniket Vaijule, Shrisha Gujar. (PHCOA)
  • 1st Prize: NDC2105: Anuj Vichare, Mihika Bhagat, FaizKasu. (PiCA)

All the designs of the prize winners were displayed along with the comments given by the panel jurors, which was indeed insightful. The event was given a closure by clicking a photo with all the winners and thanking the organizing team, Jurors and Present for ceremony.

On account of World Toilet Day 2022, Senate, PiCA Student Council, and Soroptimist Welfare Association (SIBC) organized a Guest lecture by Ar. Mayuri Sisodia and Ar. Kalpit Ashar founders of MAD(E) IN MUMBAI

The Toilet Manifesto’ MAD(E) IN MUMBAI is a design practice involved with the Discipline of Architecture and urban design. Their project ‘The Toilet Manifesto’ envisions the development of Public sewage systems in our towns and cities. It looks at ways to make utilitarian engineering systems into Comprehensive public spaces that are integrated with people’s daily lives.

Ar. Mayuri Sisodia is an architect and an Urban Designer based in Mumbai. She graduated in 2006 from Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute for Architecture and Environmental Studies, Mumbai. She completed her master’s education in Urban Design from Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London. She was involved with Charles Correa Architects for many national and international projects. Her undergraduate dissertation was presented to Maharashtra Police as a real alternative for Urban Police Stations. She has also exhibited her work at the Cities Methodologies exhibition for Urban Laboratory, Slade School of Art, London. She won the prestigious Charles Wallace India Trust award for arts in 2010. She was also the winner of the J.N.Tata Endowment and Kamla Raheja Foundation awards. She was also the faculty of Kamla Raheja.

Ar. Kalpit Ashar is also an architect and an Urbanist based in Mumbai. He graduated in 2005 from Kamla Raheja Institute for Architecture and Environmental Studies, Mumbai. He completed his master’s education in Digital tectonics, self-sufficient habitats, and emergent territories from the Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC), Spain in 2009. His undergraduate dissertation was nominated for President’s Medals Awards 2007, RIBA London. He has won J. N. Tata Endowment, Kamla Raheja Foundation, and Rotary Club awards. He was also a winner of the IAAC study grant. He was involved as a project architect with Charles Correa Associates and worked on various National & International projects. Through urban research and teaching at Kamla Raheja Institute, he has continued his association with academic space. Currently, he is involved in architectural practice with Architectural, Urban, and Landscape design projects in Mumbai and as a design faculty at Kamla Raheja Institute for Architecture. The online guest lecture was conducted on 26th November 2022 on the zoom meeting platform at 11:00 a.m. Students & Faculties from Pillai College of Architecture and other colleges attended the guest lecture. The lecture was an effort for students to acknowledge the importance of sanitation and how architecture plays an important role in providing an integrated space for the same. Students were introduced to the competition of Nirmal 2022 ‘Roadside Toilet Facilities’
