Legal empowerment of women is an effective tool to grant them courage to face the challenges of life and seek justice for the crimes against them. Awareness of the rights of women can be truly meaningful if that awareness is created amongst the younger generations of our society, as such awareness assists a person in identifying his role in the general social upliftment of the country and its people. As a step towards reinforcing the women empowerment, PICA’s Women Development Cell (WDC) along with senate council had organized a seminar on “Legal awareness of women’s rights amongst the youth”.

Adv. Amit Chavan who is a practicing lawyer in Panvel was invited as a guest speaker. Adv. Chavan practices law since 2011 at E.A. Chavan and associates located in Panvel, Navi Mumbai and are listed under – legal documents family law and property law. He specializes the civil, family conveyance and revenue and tenancy.

The session began with an audience of around 90 students and faculty members in the mini Auditorium of PICA. Adv. Amit Chavan was welcomed with a short introduction by senate council student and then the stage was handed over to Adv. Amit after which he started off with a very interactive session and believed that mere PowerPoint presentations are always one sided conversations. As he started interacting, he provided nice insights of the “right of choice” for a female in other animal families than human. The example of male weaver bird building a house and getting it approved from the female weaver bird was very much relatable and was etched in the mind of the audience. The conversation then went to the technical terms of law in which he introduced few legal terminologies like modesty, disrobing, dishonoring, outraging modesty etc. he made everyone understand what the terms mean and what it can cause if a woman decides to take legal assistance for enacting laws against them. Few of the laws were specified for the male audience as it is necessary for them to understand and be aware of, if in any case they see any misdeed happening towards a woman around them, even they can enact if they are aware of the legal rights that women possess. Adv. Amit tried to keep the conversation very simple, with very less technical terms as the aim was to make everyone aware of the rights and not spread only the book knowledge.

The seminar concluded with question answer session wherein the audience seemed very keen as a lot of questions came up and each of them were very humbly answered by our guest. WDC expressed its gratitude towards our guest by presenting him a token of appreciation.
