To provide students with the opportunity to interact with an architect practicing in the field of acoustics and to gain an understanding of different materials used in acoustic design, along with their applications in theatres, studios, and other architectural spaces.

Objective was to familiarize students with acoustic materials and their role in building design, and to explore the principles of acoustics and their practical applications in spatial design.

The site visit to Rollins Acoustics LLP was conducted under the guidance of Ar. Rolins Thomas Roy, a practicing architect and acoustics consultant. The session began with an introduction to his professional journey, highlighting his expertise in designing acoustically responsive spaces.

The interaction focused on the principles of sound behaviour in built environments, including sound absorption, transmission, and insulation. A variety of acoustic materials were demonstrated, with explanations of their properties and specific applications in theatres and recording studios.

Students were shown examples from the architect’s personal projects, which illustrated the integration of acoustics in architectural design. The discussions included critical aspects of theatre design, such as sightlines, reflection control, and sound distribution for optimal audience experience.

Technical parameters such as Reverberation Time (RT), Sound Transmission Class (STC), and Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) were introduced. Students also observed the use of sound level meters for measuring decibel levels and were introduced to the Tremble App for photogrammetry, showcasing its role in spatial and acoustic analysis.

The session was highly interactive, with students raising queries about material selection, design strategies, and practical considerations in acoustics.
