To enhance designing skills through observation and documentation, fostering an interactive learning environment for students and giving them a practical understanding of the studio they are required to design.
Objective of the Site Visit
- Understand how pots are made.
- Gain knowledge of the spaces required for pottery.
- Understand the difference between traditional pottery and modern one.
The Architectue Design studio for Semester 4 is designed to have comprehensive knowledge of the life of a potter and design a workplace for himself/herself and his/her interns who stay with him/her following the old gurukul system. The object of the site visit was to make the students understand how pots are made and also to know the spaces needed which are part and parcel of the same. They should also be aware of the different types of clay used and craftsmanship needed to produce a beautiful artifact.
The site visit to Tupgaon and Indapur was planned at the start of the semester. The aim of visiting Tupgaon was to understand the traditional method of making pots which find their space in our everyday life, while the one to Indapur focussed on pottery which has an aesthetic purpose to it.
During the site visit, Prof. Neha Sayed with the help of the lady potter explained the entire process from procuring of the clay, sieving it till the firing of the dry pots to attain the hardness required for its use. The other faculties too were involved in this process and also finalised a site needed for this project. Students meticulously observed and documented details like the road to approach to site, the distance between the trees, their names, the electric cables, etc. on the site.
On the second half of the day we visited a studio of the renowned artist Mr. Sandeep Manchekar who is the owner of Anvi pottery in Indapur. Due to his immense experience in modern pottery, he explained all the processes (educational as well as scientific) involved in making pots. He took us around his studio, kilns, his residence, clay storage space and his farm too.
Guests lectures will be conducted as the studio work progresses to help students understand the entire process, including various spaces required and site dynamics.
Students involved for site visit (Total 52, Boys – 21 and Girls 31) – Second year batch of B.Arch. Course (AY: 24-25).
