The 10th Kamu Iyer Design Competition (KIDC) 2024-25 was successfully conducted on 25th January 2025 at the AIKTC School of Architecture, New Panvel. The event served as an excellent platform for academic discourse, showcasing Semester V Architectural Design Projects from various architecture colleges affiliated with the University of Mumbai (UoM).
A varied number of colleges from Navi Mumbai participated in the competition. Each participating college sent 2 to 3 students, depending on their batch intake. A lot of students presented their architectural projects and engaged in interactive discussions. Several academicians, professionals, and practitioners attended the event, contributing valuable insights to the discussions. Three students from Pillai College of ARCHITECTURE participated, among whom one student secured 1st place, while the other two students also received great appreciation for their Semester V design work.
Submissions:
- Digital submissions were successfully received between 18th – 21st January 2025.
- Hard copy submissions, along with architectural models, were displayed on 8ft x 4ft panels as per the competition guidelines.
- The visual and physical display of projects significantly enhanced engagement and discussions.
Event Highlights:
- The competition was conducted in an open discussion forum, promoting academic exchange and critical thinking.
- Participants showcased their design projects through presentations, pin-ups, and physical architectural models.
- The event facilitated constructive feedback from experts in the field of architecture.
- The exhibition of student projects was open for public viewing from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Competition Day Requirements:
The jury evaluated the projects based on several critical aspects. Project relevance was a key criterion, assessing how well the design addressed present and future needs. Site analysis focused on understanding the site context and identifying opportunities for thoughtful design solutions. The jury also examined how effectively the urban context and land optimization were integrated into the design process, ensuring a balance between functionality and spatial planning. Another crucial factor was the evolution of architectural form and language, reflecting the student’s understanding of the urban environment.
Additionally, materiality and design elements played a significant role, with emphasis on the use of building materials, finishes, and design elements in shaping a cohesive and meaningful urban built form. The jury session was conducted in an open discussion format, fostering insightful debates and exchange of ideas, with results announced shortly after deliberation. Among which Alan Pinto from 3rd Year secured the 1st Place in the Competition. Unnati and Satyajeet`s were greatly appreciated by the jury panel.
The jury panel comprised renowned architects and academicians, who appreciated the students’ efforts and the quality of projects presented.
