The students of Mahatma Education Society’s Pillai’s College of Architecture, New Panvel celebrated Marathi bhasha divas on 28th February. Marathi bhasha divas is celebrated annually on February 27th to honor the birth anniversary of famous Marathi poet Vishnu Vaman Shirwadkar, who was popularly known as ‘Kusumagraj’.

Shirwadkar was an eminent Marathi poet, playwright, novelist, short story writer, and humanist. He wrote a lot about freedom, justice, and social evils like poverty. He wrote 16 volumes of poems, three novels, eight volumes of short stories, seven volumes of essays, and 18 plays and six one-act plays. The day is celebrated to recognise and honor the greatness of Marathi literature. Marathi language contains some of the oldest literature of all modern Indo-Aryan languages, dating from about 900 AD. The government started celebrating ‘Marathi Rajbhasha Gaurav Din’ after Kusumagraj’s demise in 1999. Two special awards for individuals taking initiatives to promote Marathi literature were also started.

How was the day celebrated?
The theme for the event was to highlight the main festivals celebrated by the maharashtrian people in the marathi months starting from chaitra to falgun. How these festivals are celebrated by the agrarian society of Maharashtra and their culture and traditions was also represented. Before starting with the program, a small feta stall was arranged, just to enhance the maharashtrian culture and traditions. The program began with a prayer by our student and was followed by the lamp lighting by our principal Dr. Sudnya Mahimkar and other faculties.

The celebration started with a small introductory note about the theme and then the celebrations, culture, traditions of the festivals were represented. Starting with the month of chaitra, the new year of maharashtrians: Gudi padwa was represented by a small skit highlighting the glimpses of how gudi is raised towards the sky in front of doors/ windows which represents victory and a lezim performance by the students . 12 festivals from chaitra to falgun like Gudi padwa, Akshay tritiya, vat pournima, Aashadi ekadashi, Bail pola, Ganesh chaturthi, dussehra ,diwali, datta jayanti, makar sankranti, shivratri, holi from 12 months of the marathi calendar were represented through skit, dance, poetry and speech.

The main motive behind going ahead with the festival theme was to make everyone understand the cultural importance of each festival along with their other significances. To make everyone know what is the maharashtrian culture/ traditions. Majority of these festivals are originated from the rural areas of Maharashtra for years. So also to show how these festivals are actually celebrated by the people in villages, the theme of agrarian society was chosen.

The function revealed many aspects of our culture before the audience.

Lastly the event ended on a good note by giving a tribute to Shri. lata mangeshkar by playing the video of the widely versed prayer in Maharashtra Pasaydan which was sung by her.
